When it is time to think of holidays, you will find it hard to imagine a more magnificent natural beauty than that of Central Dalmatia, where the Adriatic Sea meets the highest Mediterranean mountains. The coast and islands are studded with beaches shaded by thick pine forests, whose freshness seeps out over the shingle to a crystal sea. Natural beauty is enhanced by evidence of the region's human history: ancient, old-Croatian, Romanesque and folk buildings, extending well as right along the coast in picturesque villages and small towns. In these smaller places, as in larger towns, there are superb locations for a holiday, entertainment and rest - a silence which can send you to sleep, and sonorous Mediterranean nights soaked with the hot breath of the south. If this whole region has a common characteristic, it is the simple and good-hearted sincerity of the domestic host, his peaceable yet boisterous nature, the unaffected desire to present his guest with the very best of everything. You cannot pack it in your suitcase when you return home, but it will remain in your soul until you visit once again. Split is the cultural and economic hub of Central Dalmatia. It grew out of the Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, built around AD 300 and now a place where ancient times live on alongside the urban rhythm of the twentieth century. Its 1700 years of living history is protected by the UNESCO and will always fire the interest of visitors and travellers. | |
